Game Developer Research just put out their “2008 State Of Game Development Survey.” Pretty interesting data on game developers here.

What are they working on?

  • 70% respondents are making computer games (PC, Mac)
  • 43% are console game developers
  • 28% are web game developers
  • 16% developing games for handhelds (DS, PSP)

Console Developers (some overlap)

  • 73% developing Xbox 360 games
  • 58% developing PlayStation 3 games
  • 42% developing Wii games
  • 15% developing PlayStation 2 games (still?)

DS/PSP

  • 75% developing for DS
  • 45% developing for PSP

I’ve spent the last hour preparing my video camera to hold a massive amount of video. I’m heading to Barcamp Madison (Madison, WI) tomorrow and I’ll spend the weekend packing in as much learning as I possibly can (you should see the sessions already planned). Of course, that fact that we’re having a LAN party, a Wii fight and an XBox time slot means I get to game at least a little bit as well.

Sunday afternoon I fly to San Francisco so that I can help Women in Games at GDC. I get to work the booth on Weds and Thurs morning and Fri afternoon. I’ve also got a few interviews lined up for the videoblog at GDC. I’m especially looking forward to getting to see EA at the WIGI event and getting to attend the Microsoft party on Thursday night. I still can’t believe I get paid to do this kind of work…

Anyway, I’m almost prepared. I’ve packed as many geek Ts as I can fit in my ginormous girl suitcase and I’ve lovingly wrapped my laptops and game machines into 2 carry on bags. I’ve got a backlog of work (including 3 podcasts) that I can work on during the flights and a healthy supply of Vince Flynn, Matthew Reilly and Tom Clancy novels. I’m all set.

If you are going to be at GDC or Barcamp Madison, let me know. I look forward to meeting some new people this week!

I was spurred to take some pics of my home office setup after I realized how much I enjoyed drooling over the mobile office setups of Aaron Tersteeg, Steve Paine and Layne Heiny, I had to share some of my pics. Of course, the closest thing I have to UMPC is a smart phone (Treo 700w) and an Audiovox 6700, but I do have a lot of hardware, so have fun ogling. :)

My desk

my home office

I am at this desk from early morning to late at night. You can see the dual XBox 360s on the other side of the room, behind my monitor. My husband’s desk is next to the 360s. My son is playing the Wii next to my monitor. You can even see my treadmill next to the Wii. The bowflex is folded up next to the treadmill. I actually do use them. ;)

The Wii area

The Wii setup

I have a small Wii setup next to my desk and here’s my son, Jacob, playing a Wii sports game. He’s 4. My baby, Ruby, almost 2, likes boxing, but clearly she’s absolutely horrible at it! My 6 year old daughter, Grace, and 9 year old daughter, Cady, are doing well in Zelda, but the 6 year old just really walks around, and doesn’t do any of the quest.

Here’s the 360 setup closer

My XBox 360s

The monitor on the floor runs the one on the left. You can see our haphazard networking setup over the top of the TV.

Next, panning left, is my husband’s desk

James' desk

It’s a horrible mess. But, since he doesn’t really work much from home it’s more of a papers’ repository than an actual working area.

The pool table

pool table next to my desk

My office was once the den/rec room, so I can now brag I have a pool table in my office. We do play it once a week or so. I’m pretty good, but my husband is a shark. Doh! Now I guess he won’t be taking any of your money, huh?

Here’s the recording area.

We have alot of fun here. Lots of neighborhood budding musicians hang out with us to use us for our setup. LOL

And when I’m not working

robyn takes a break with the wii

The video is in Norwegian, so do not expect to understand the how, but the results are pretty special. Joystiq says this crosses the line from geek into official dorkdom, but I am impressed nonetheless. Woot for bluetooth.
