Last night I went to see the midnight showing of the new Harry Potter movie, ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’. It was excellent, just as I expected, and while I’m tempted to fill this with spoilers, I know many of you will soon see the film so I’ll spare you that horror. I’ll just say that it was one of the first movies I didn’t check my watch on and I couldn’t leave my seat for a moment.
The video game has been out since late June, but I got to see the making of the video game Monday night on G4 and it was compelling. I dug up the XBox 360 trailer for the game, which is available on the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and the DS.
Rated: E10+
Coming Soon: July 2007
System: Exclusively on Nintendo DS
As the DS is one of our favorite little machines around our house, I thought I’d give you a just-released trailer for the DS, Dynasty Warriors DS: Fighter’s Battle.
From the press release:
In the game, players will take the role of one of three new characters, each with its own special attribute: the Phoenix (key attribute: balance), the Dragon (key attribute: speed), and the Chimera (key attribute: power). Using a “Battle Deck” of cards, players will select up to seven of the original Dynasty Warriors to serve as officers who will defend their bases.
A new “Obstacle Roulette System” lets players unleash tactics or spells using cards from the players’ Battle Deck. These Obstacle attacks can disrupt an opponent’s progress and are crucial to victory, especially in the game’s wireless Vs. mode!
The game looks good enough, with passable graphics, but it will have to be very good to take a bite at the action card genre that is filling up fast with great series. Dynasty Warriors is not a new series (see Wikipedia), by far, first coming to us in 1997, as a spin-off of a popular series, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The first games played similarly to Tekken, but the multitude of titles that have followed have since distanced itself from that playing style.
The games have respectability, a good, if oft-told storyline, and a healthy fan base, but will the move to a card playing style and a heavy Anime influence change that? Who knows, but I’m sure it will be added to our Gamefly account in the near future (that is if we can keep ourselves off of our N64, as we are once again addicted to Zelda: Ocarina of Time)
